A description is given of a new method and a new measuring instrument for determining the plane deformation of banknotes, securities, and other commercial documents. The deformation unit models the compression of a paper specimen, while a scanner and computer operating on a specially developed program provide for measurement of strains on the order 2.0–5.0 mm with an absolute error no greater than ±10 μm.
