A method for reducing one-dimensional inverse problems of wave propagation theory to Cauchy problems for nonlinear systems of ordinary differential equations is proposed. This approach is applicable to a special class of inverse data, which is dense in the whole set of data equipped with any natural topology. ©1998 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
