摘要
On 12th October 1992 Egypt was hit by one of the largest earthquakes with magnitude of mΒ = 5.9. This earthquake occured at the Dahshour region 35 km south-west of the center of Cairo (the Capital). Widespread damage occured in the cities Cairo and El-Faiyum and in many villages in the epicentral area. Different geophysical and geodetic investigations were performed in and around the greater Cairo region. This paper focuses on the results obtained by the analysis of GPS measurements and earthquake data. The main aim of these studies are mapping of the tectonic elements presented within the region under investigation, to understand the geodynamics of the region and to have a better understanding about the cause of the earthquake occurence and its origin. Also we try to find the possible association between crustal deformation and earthquake activity in and around the greater Cairo region.
