Electron paramagnetic resonance and Gd3+ clustering in the {xGd2O3-(1 − x)(La2O3-Al2O3-B2O3-SiO2-GeO2)} glasses

A multicomponent glass system 20La2O3-22Al2O3-23B2O3-35(SiO2 + GeO2) in which part of La2O3 is substituted by Gd2O3 in different concentrations has been studied by EPR. The EPR spectra show the presence of clustering at higher Gd contents. At low temperatures, the cluster-related resonance signal is altered in shape, indicating the appearance of a magnetic anisotropy field.
