A sequence containing the promoter of the 12S rRNA gene was localized in the divergent region of Leptomonas seymouri maxicircular kinetoplast (mitochondrial) DNA. The sequence was tested for the ability to initiate transcription in an in organello system of isolated L. seymouri mitochondria.
