Applying 58S Bioglass Coating on Titanium Substrate: Effect of Multiscale Roughness on Bioactivity, Corrosion Resistance and Coating Adhesion

In this research, 58S bioactive glass powders were synthesized by sol–gel method and after calcination at 650 °C and grinding, the powders were electrophoretically coated on the surface treated titanium substrates. The substrates were treated with sandblasting, acid etching and anodizing in order to achieve a different amount of surface roughness and topography. The crystallinity of the synthesized powder was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The morphology and composition of bioactive glass powder as well as the coatings were studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In vitro assays for powders and coated samples were carried out in simulated body fluid (SBF) and formation of apatite studied by XRD. The dissolution behavior of the coating during immersion was studied by inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The surface properties of the coating including wettability, adhesion of the coating to the substrate and corrosion resistance of the samples were evaluated. The results showed that the coating applied on the sandblasted-acid-etch and anodized titanium substrate shows the best bioactivity and corrosion resistance behavior. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
