摘要
We propose using the Alford and Gold effect to measure the birefringence of single-mode fibers. Two methods of measuring the birefringence of single-mode fibers, namely, with pulsed and continuous optical radiation sources, which are based on this effect, are considered. It is shown that measurement with a continuous radiation source has a number of significant advantages compared to measurement with a pulsed radiation source. The influence of random inhomogeneities in single-mode fibers on the accuracy of measurement of linear birefringence is quantitatively considered for the case of a continuous radiation source using numerical simulation.
