Background: Only few interventions in the area of prevention and health promotion focus on suitable educational science theories or methodological–didactic designs. To date, an individual health education theory based on educational research findings does not exist. The theoretical and empiric findings from educational and teaching/learning research, however, present a broad basis for application within the framework of interventions in health education. Methods: Based on theories and findings from empirical educational research, this contribution will derive recommendations for health education. It will cover the meaning of education, educational research, and health education research. Results: Based on the findings identified, the design-based research approach will be explained in more detail as a possible suitable approach, and it will be further analyzed in terms of its potential for implementation in health education. © 2017, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
