Wire drawing of iron aluminide, having a composition of Fe-30Al, was simulated using the metal forming finite element software DEFORM. The results from this study relate drawing stress, deformation work, and temperature rise of the wire experienced during deformation together with process design parameters such as interface friction factor, drawing velocity, initial temperature of the wire and the amount of reduction. The model incorporates flow stress as a function of strain, strain rate and temperature. Results show that the drawing stress is a strong function of the process design parameters and the percentage of temperature rise attributed to heating effects other than due to deformation work during drawing is significant.
