Extracorporeal shock-wave therapy uses high-pressure waves that are focused at a point within tissue. These high-pressure waves (through yet unknown mechanisms) can stimulate bone and soft tissue healing. Shockwave therapy is a proven mechanism for treating musculoskeletal disease in many species, including horses. Practitioners must be aware of potential complications, however.
