The article presents the guidelines of European Union (EU) education policy in knowledge-based economy, main strategic goals of Lithuania education policy, meeting trends of European education policy. The economical context of Lithuanian education system is presented analyzing five main European and Lithuanian benchmarks related to early school leavers; mathematics, science and technology (MST); completion of upper secondary education; basic skills; lifelong learning.
