Assimilation of satellite data in crop monitoring and yield prediction

摘要
Satellite data, principally from SPOT, were used to make regional forecasts of sugar beet production in England. Crop canopy cover f was estimated from vegetation index measurements and used to adjust parameters of an empirical-agrometeorological model of the f profile. Production forecasts within 0.1 t/ha were achieved for over half the regions. SAR data also gave promising results, with lower absolute precision but greater regularity of acquisition.
