Primary ovarian rhabdomyosarcoma in a 42-year-old woman: A case report

This is a report on a 42-year-old woman with a primary ovarian rhabdomyosarcoma, who presented with dyspnea and rapid abdominal distension. The abdominal mass was removed and after final histological and immunohistochemical analysis the initial frozen section diagnosis of a borderline tumor had to be corrected to a primary ovarian rhabdomyosarcoma in addition to a cystadenoma with borderline differentiation. The rapid tumor growth required a second laparotomy already two months after initial surgery. Eight months after the first presentation ascites with cells of an adenocarcinoma occurred, followed by the appearance of malignant cells in the pleural effusion and peritoneal carcinomatosis. Despite maximal therapy the patient died within one year after diagnosis.
