The Advanced Tether Experiment (ATEx) was launched into orbit aboard the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) sponsored Space Technology Experiment spacecraft (STEX) on October 3, 1998. ATEx was intended to demonstrate deployment and survivability of a novel tether design as well as controlled libration maneuvers. On January 16, 1999 after deployment of only 22 meters of tether, ATEx was jettisoned from STEX due to an out-of-limits condition sent by the experiment's tether angle sensor. This paper reviews the essential system design, presents the available night data, suggests likely causes of failure, and summarizes lessons learned.
