Old stars in dwarf irregular galaxies: WLM and NGC3109

摘要：
We present evidence for the existence of old stellar halos in the dwarf irregular galaxies WLM and NGC3109, located in the outskirts of the Local Group. These halos consist of metal-poor ([Fc/H] < -1) and old (t > 10(10) yr) stars, as inferred from deep optical color-magnitude diagrams obtained with the ESO NTT and with STIS on-board the HST. Future VLT spectroscopy will allow us to measure the kinematics of stars in these halos and also to estimate the dark matter content of these galaxies.
