摘要
We describe a technique for finding star-forming galaxies at redshifts z greater than or similar to 3. The technique exploits strong Lyman-continuum absorption in spectra of the galaxies; by using a custom filter set that straddles this "Lyman break", we are able to find 2 greater than or similar to 3 candidates in relatively efficient broad-band imaging surveys. Spectroscopic follow-up shows that most of the candidates are indeed at z greater than or similar to 3, and suggests that they may be the high-redshift counterparts of the spheroid component of present-day luminous galaxies.
