The objective of research was to compare changes in concentrations of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and lipid profile after a hypocaloric diet in obese subjects. One hundred five adult subjects were included who were attended at the University Hospital of Maracaibo, Venezuela. Subjects were instructed to follow a hypocaloric diet for 12 weeks. Anthropometric variables, concentrations of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and lipid profile were evaluated. Significant decreases were observed in values of body mass index, waist circumference and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein after hypocaloric diet program for weight loss compared to initial values (p < 0.05). A significant decrease in serum concentrations of total cholesterol and triglycerides was observed after the program (p = 0.039 and p = 0.028, respectively). Serum concentrations of low density and high-density lipoproteins decreased after the diet program, but the differences were not significant (p = 0.229 and p = 0.142, respectively). It is concluded that concentrations of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, cholesterol, and triglycerides decrease significantly in obese subjects after the implementation of a hypocaloric diet program for weight loss.
