Copper(I) chloride complexes in aqueous solution

The chloride complexes of copper (I) have been studied, at 25 degrees C in 3 M Na(ClO4,) medium by potentiometric titrations with a Cu-Hg/Cu+ half-cell in the [Cl-] range 0.05 to 3 M, and by solubility determinations of Cu(s) in Cu(ClO4)(2), solutions in which 10(-4) less than or equal to [Cl-] less than or equal to 10(-2) M. Data for low metal concentrations, [Cu(I)] less than or equal to 5.10(-3)M, are consistent with the equilibria [GRAPHICS] The effect of medium changes, caused by the replacement of ClO4- with Cl-, was accounted for by the specific interaction theory, SIT. Stability constants in the infinite dilution reference state, log beta(1)(0), = 3.1(6)+/-0.2, log beta(2)(0), = 5.37+/-0.15, log beta(3)(0), = 4.7+/-0.2, log beta(4)(0), = 2.8+/-0.3, were estimated by SIT.
