摘要
Results of geotechnical investigation offshore of the Red Sea at Suakin, Sudan, are presented. The soil formations encountered are highly heterogenous and dominated by coral reefs interbedded and intermixed with silty clay and gravelly sand. The corals are course, porous and rough in texture and contain substantial amounts of calcium carbonate. The coral reefs are loose to medium dense near the seabed. The loose corals and very soft clay deposits are the major design concerns. Suggesions were made to preload the area before construction. Preloading was found acceptable during the construction of the existing berth.
