The-seismic retrofit of 215 Fremont Street San Francisco, California

The 215 Fremont Street building in San Francisco, California was designed by Albert F. Roller Architect, San Francisco, and built in 1927. The building was declared unsafe after suffering extensive damage in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. In 1999 the property was sold "as is" and the new developer embarked on a seismic retrofit of the existing building and the addition of two new floors. This paper describes the evaluation of the existing building, as well as the analysis and design of the retrofitted structure and foundation to meet the 1997 Uniform Building Code(1).
