摘要
The advent of powerful computers has made possible the development of complex models to represent biological systems. Here I show how simple models may nevertheless be valuable for helping to understand the mechanisms of complex rhythms in biological systems. Specifically, I consider cellular automata models for the generation of spiral waves of activity, and differential equation models for biological oscillations and genetic networks. The simple models can help in the development of experiments and the formulation and evaluation of more realistic models.
