Indoor spaces have been implicated in spreading many diseases, including COVID-19. Engineers are looking at improving HVAC systems to make gathering places—from offices to restaurants—safer. For instance, elevated temperatures lead to increased air conditioning use which consumes more electricity that causes more carbon emissions. What’s more, some of the most efficient HVAC designs potentially create enhanced conditions for airborne disease transmission.
