Effects of the properties of sandy layers on the consolidation behaviour of clay

摘要
This paper presents the results of a parametric study on the influence of the permeability and compressibility of two sandy soil layers on the consolidation behaviour of a clay layer. A finite element model is developed and used for the consolidation modelling of the three layer system. In the finite element model, Terzaghi's model is used for the sandy soils and Yin and Graham's elastic visco-plastic model is used for the clay. Main results from the FE modelling are presented and discussed regarding the influence of the permeability and compressibility of the sandy soils on the compression, strain and excess porewater pressure of the clay layer.
