The epoch of Emperor Louis the Pious was a time of crisis, correction and self-reflection. Intellectuals like the Reichenau scholar Walahfrid Strabo were requested to present models of identity. By using the resources of the Roman antique and late antique past they created compilations that helped to develop perspectives of political and social balance. Walahfrid found the idea of the equivalence of the ecclesia and imperium - which seems to have been important in the time of Louis the Pious and Charles the Bald - in sources like the Codex-calendar of 354 or the Chronica de VI aetatibus mundi, which he copied in his famous Vademecum.
