We discuss the formation of vacuum expectation values of local fermion bilinears in two dimensional massless QCD. We employ a path-integral approach in order to clarify the connection of topological issues with the existence of fermionic correlators. We find that although nontrivial winding configurations are taken into account, the elemental condensate [<(psi)over bar psi>] vanishes, avoiding possible signals of chiral symmetry breaking. We also show that zero modes related to vortex-like configurations give rise to non-vanishing higher order correlators.
