Forest management planning in 'Sylwan' in the years 1820-2020

'Sylwan' is the oldest Polish forest scientific journal. Over the years it has been presenting methods of forest management planning, providing scientific explanation of various current problems and issues of forestry at home and abroad, thus contributing to the increase of expertise in the field. One of the most important departments of forestry has been forest organisation, which has been discussed in the 'Sylwan' journal as well. This paper describes the most important (according to the authors) issues of forest management planning, which have been published in the journal. It must be noted, however, that it was the authors' subjective choice. It is important to be aware that the persons involved in forest management planning dealt not only with the issues presented in this study, but also with many other issues, e.g. forest monitoring, spatial planning, stands productivity and measurement methods which, due to the size of the article, have been omitted here. The interested reader will certainly find them by typing the names of the authors in search engines. The names can be found in the references. It is important to highlight a big increase in the number of published works related to forest management planning. Taking into account the following list of literature, it can be concluded that by 1945 more than 70 articles had been published, and after 1945 about 250. Bearing in mind that many topics were omitted, it can be concluded that forest management planning was (and probably still is) important for Polish forestry, and that those involved in it, on the one hand, formed a rich theoretical basis and, on the other hand, responded to the needs of practice.
