The newspaper time. Media construction of temporal experience in XIX century

In the 19th century, newspaper time replaced the types of temporality older media had diffused: the daily newspaper substituted the cyclical temporality of almanacs, a sacred temporality of repetition reflecting the rhythms of nature, and the idealised time of the gazettes, which build up the story of contemporary events according to the distance separating them from their occurrence, with a kind of permanent present, grounded in linearity and the primacy of the event, leading to the perception of an acceleration of the rhythm of life. The staging of chronic instability nevertheless functions according to cyclical logics, ant the newspaper headings become a model for the perception of the world that transforms the succession of events into a series. Writers adapted to this new regime by developing their media presence over time, transforming their works into serials.
