Rare-metal syenites of the Ukrainian Shield

The Ukrainian Shield contains unusual, nepheline-free rare-metal syenites. Differentiated (layered) intrusions of these rocks host two deposits rich in Zr, REE, and Y:Azovskoe and Yastrebetskoe. The rare-metal syenites typically bear Fe-rich mafic minerals (fayalite, hedenbergite, aegirine-hedenbergite, aegirine, ferro-hastingsite, katophorite, riebeckite, and annite) and are characterized by high background concentrations of Zr (0.1-0.3%) and REE (0.05-0.2%). The rocks are genetically and spatially related to anorthosite-rapakivi plutons.
