Architectural synergies: Participatory design and construction of a pavilion prototype

An integrated approach to design and construction may be achieved through architectural workshops of specific educational context and aims that may serve as complementary modules within the architectural curriculum. The pavilion prototype presented herein was realized in a six-week design and construction phase. The primary structure consists of non-symmetrical frames, arranged in parallel and in sequential rotation. The frames rotation defines the building morphology of the pavilion and, at the same time, shapes the interior. The objectives of the research program in question involve the investigation of terms and conditions for the development and implementation of an architectural idea. In addition, the particular workshop aims at investigating and promoting the role of the structure and construction elements in the creation of the built form. An important outcome, in terms of the participatory design conducted, has been the actual cooperation of primary school pupils with architecture students.
