Numerous by-products are generated annually by primary aluminum smelters. Most of these by-products are generated during the treatment and handling of electrolytic bath, the anode rodding process, the cathode demolition process and various potroom operations. Market demands for high purity metal, however, have made by-product recycling in the process more difficult. As a result, some recycling activities have greatly been reduced or abandoned. This paper addresses the approach taken by Canadian Reynolds Metals Company Ltd. - Baie Comeau plant to manage by-products.
