CampusWorld and BT's on-line education services

CampusWorld was BT's first internat service. Aimed at education users, it replaces an existing session-oriented bulletin board system that has been running for the last 16 years. This paper describes how the team turned the connectionless webserver technology into an access-controlled information service for the 1990s. It describes the hardware and network architecture that was used, the software that was required, problems that were encountered during development and how they were overcome. Finally it outlines how the CampusWorld platform has been used as the basis for a new set of products, CampusConnect, CampusHome and CampusProfessional.
