Open charm and beauty photoproduction at HERA

We report on measurements at the HERA ep collider of differential cross sections for the photoproduction of D*(2010)(+/-) mesons at photon-proton centre of mass energies 80 < W < 120 GeV and for the inclusive jet production in D*-tagged events at 130 < W < 280 GeV. The measured cross sections are generally larger than the NLO predictions, in particular in the forward (proton) direction. A recent tree-level calculation (BKL) describes the D* cross sections reasonably well. We also studied electrons from particle decays in dijet photoproduction events at 0.2 < y < 0.8 and determined the resolved fraction to be similar to 35 % and the fraction emerging from beauty decays to be similar to 20 %. Leading-order MC simulations describe these fractions reasonably well but fail in predicting the absolute magnitude of the beauty production cross section.
