Surface waves and magnetic reconnection at a magnetopause

摘要
It is argued that surface waves with wavelengths larger than the thickness of a neutral layer that separates two different plasma regimes can induce the tearing mode instability. Magnetic reconnection is shown to occur on the tearing mode time scale.
