Purification of gallium by zone-refining and its characterization

Multi-pass zone refining of indigenous 3N pure gallium was carried out with a view to improve and prepare better purity gallium. Purity of the starting 3N pure and refined gallium bar (samples of top, middle and bottom portions) has been analyzed. The segregation trend of the selected impurity elements such as Al, Cu, Fe, Zn, Ag, Pb, B has been studied. Along the top region of the refined bar, it was found that, most of the impurity elements have gone below its detection limit, resulting in 5N5 pure material with reference to the selected impurities. Reproducibility of the test results were also established and confirmed. Pure samples were characterized by SEM-EDAX, XRD methods.
