SLE is a complex disease that requires a multidisciplinary team to achieve best patient outcomes. Health care providers, including physician assistants, in numerous medical specialties (eg, primary care, rheumatology, dermatology, nephrology, neurology, pulmonology, cardiology) may participate on an individual's health care team based on disease manifestations. Other health professionals are also key. Being a chronic condition, the patient and the provider have the opportunity to work together to choose best treatment and monitoring approaches for best outcomes. Advances have been made in the understanding of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of SLE. Additional discovery awaits.
