摘要：
We have to reconsider whether the current structure of search engines provides us with useful results. A modular approach to constructing spiders will facilitate more development, hopefully resulting in new information retrieval techniques. A layered architecture will improve our access to data on the Internet, which is crucial in our information driven society. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
