摘要
Lao is a forested, monsoonal country, which supports at least 28 species of rattan in 6 genera. Taxonomic studies are being made, and a comprehensive manual is being researched. The Lao rattan sector includes major trade in both stems and shoots. Shoot production includes an increasing proportion from plantations, mainly of a single species preferring rich riverbank sites. This species is easy to grow, requires no shade and the extent of plantations will probably expand rapidly. Other species may be more suitable for different soil types. Stem production is almost entirely from wild populations, although some small trials are being made on the nursery stages of a few valuable cane species. Wild populations are commonly reported to be declining, but no studies have been made. Some studies have begun to support management of natural Populations. There is great scope for developing plantations for stems.
