The design of 'piggyback landfills' (i.e. lateral or vertical expansion of existing waste disposal facilities) presents unique problems which require careful evaluation of the impact of both settlement and stability issues. This paper presents a case study which demonstrates how geosynthetic materials have been utilized to address settlement and stability problems in a piggyback landfill design for a sludge monofill.
