摘要
In multilateral negotiations and other political contexts, proverbs and figures of speech can be used to emphasize and legitimize statements. As allusive formulae, they are suited for implicit communication without direct accusations or claims which is typical for many political contexts. This article sheds light on the functions of proverbs and figures of speech as part of communicative strategies in multilateral negotiations and asks for contextual aspects which need to be taken into consideration when analyzing them.
