The equilibrium characteristics of inert gas crystals and isothermal compressibility were determined by the modified method of the functional of electron density (MMFED), based on the application of a variational procedure fdr minimization of the energy of an isolated atom. The equations of ''cold compression'' were derived. The approximation-free potentials were used to calculate the surface energy and surface tension of Ne-Ne, Ar-Ar, and Kr-Kr crystals. Comparison with experiment demonstrates the possibility of using the MMFED for the calculation of crystalline potentials.
