A performance based design method for the effective use of elastomeric dampers in the seismic retrofit of existing steel special moment resisting frames (SMRFs) and the design of new steel SMRFs is presented. A simplified design procedure (SDP) is used to determine the sizes of the dampers and braces. Nonlinear dynamic time history analyses show that SMRFs with dampers and braces designed using the SDP achieve the specified seismic performance objectives, and that elastomeric dampers are more effective when used in a more flexible SMRF.
