Risk and liability in hydrology (Project C6)

The modelling of risk and reliability in hydrology is an area that has been subject to major developments in recent years. There is a great interest in developing a systematic approach to risk management of large scale water resources systems where many factors and many sources of uncertainty intervene. The objective of the present project is to develop a know-how in the area of risk modelling and management in water resources, and in particular as applied to hydroelectric systems. Risk and reliability considerations are present in many active projects in Hydro-Quebec, including the development of dynamic state bounds for reservoir operations, the elaboration of flood warning systems, and the study of the energy reliability derived from the operation and planning models. A good assessment of risks surrounding these activities is necessary to a good management of water resource systems.
