GRAPHIC EYESORE: BRIEF HISTORY OF CARICATURE WITH VALLE-INCLAN AT THE BACK

This article aims to provide information and reflections on the history of caricature that allow us to approach it from a point of view differing from the traditional understanding of caricature, which has usually been limited to relate caricature to the grotesque due to formal similarities. By expanding the focus to the historical, social and cultural practices of the image, the author intends to demonstrate that the deformation and exaggeration in caricature are tools that allow caricature to assume the expressive function that Art abandons during the Renaissance. This text explores the relationship of caricature with humor, satire, and the press. Finally, I infer, through the work of Valle-Inclan, how caricatural mechanisms can be applied to other artistic fields, such as literature, in search of similar expressive effects. (JC)
