Histeroscopy in women treated with tamoxifen for breast cancer

We performed the histeroscopic evaluation_of the influence of tamoxifen on the endometrium of women with previous breast cancer. From January 2002 to December 2006 we studied histeroscopically 150 women with breast cancer treated with tamoxifen, 20 mg daily. We used a 4 mm hysteroscopy with normal saline as uterine distension medium and performed endometrial biopsy. All the women were previously screened with transvaginal ultrasonography to assess endometrial thickness (> 4 mm.). Only one endometrial adenocarcinoma was found. In almost the 50% of the patients we found endometrial polyps and in the other cases endometrial cystic atrophy. In breast cancer patients the incidence of endometrial abnormalities before the start of the therapy with tamoxifen is high. Based on these findings we believe that the hysteroscopy whith sampling under vision has a better diagnostic compliance for the detection of endometrial abnormalities.
