Construction and performance of a geosynthetic reinforced unpaved road

A full scale field trial was carried out to investigate the performance of different geosynthetics in unpaved road construction over soft ground. One section is unreinforced and serves as a control section in the study, three sections include a geotextile, and one includes a geogrid. Each test section incorporated a variable thickness of sand gravel base course material, and was trafficked by a vehicle of standard axle load. A comparison of field performance with the most commonly used design approach indicates a potential to overpredict the number of vehicle passes at small to moderate ruts.
