In this article, I will describe and analyze for the first time the unpublished "work manuscripts" of Valle-Inclan's Tirano Banderas. These manuscripts are part of the Legado Valle-Inclan Alsina; the originals are deposited in the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. These drafts, the origin material of the novel, allow us to reconstruct the novel's genesis, which, until the present, had been confined to the printed materials from the press and from book editions. The aforementioned notes constitute the textual history of a work that has been recognized widely for its innovations, from a narratological point of view, as well as for its importance in the development of the so-called "dictator novel." In this article, following the guidelines of genetic criticism, I will carry out a material description of the hand-written documents, grouped together under the title Tirano Banderas in the original inventory of the above-mentioned Legado. In this inventory, there are 81 quartos handwritten by Valle-IncIan, distributed in eleven subfolders, consecutively numbered which does not necessarily imply semantic continuity, whose character and typology I will attempt to systematize and selectively exemplify (this constitutes a second goal of the present article). Finally, I will address the matter of dating the writing of the manuscript which, like all of the holdings of the Legado, is not dated; I will also make some provisional conclusions regarding the complex process of the writing of Tirano Banderas and its implications.
