Effect of thermal exposure on the microstructure and hardness of a γ-TiAl alloy

The aim of the present study is to determine the effects of long-term exposure, up 1380h to a temperature of the range 800 degrees C-950 degrees C in air, on the stability of microstructure and properties of TiAl alloy. The evolution of microstructure after long-term annealing has been investigated for a Ti48Al2Cr2Nb alloy. Long-term annealing was performed in the range 23-1380h at 800 degrees C-950 degrees C. The alloys annealed at 800 degrees C did not show much change, whereas prolonged annealing at 900 degrees C and 950 degrees C produced significant fragmentation of alpha(2) lamellae and formation of gamma grains.
