Quality assessment of seismic recording: the Tehran Seismic Telemetry Network

The Tehran Seismic Telemetry Network commenced operation in 1996, but it has never published any bulletins and there has been no systematic evaluation of the precision and reliability of its seismic recording. In this paper a standard approach is presented to evaluate the quality of operation of the Network. Our findings show no serious gaps in data coverage and the threshold of completeness is about magnitude 2 within the Network. We show that incorrect phase reading is the major reason for errors in identifying the phases, and the large scatter in arrival times. We propose a number of suggestions for the improvement of network operation. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
