Fabrication of Y-Ba-Cu-O superconducting rods for current leads by unidirectional solidification

We fabricated long rod-shape current leads using a large cold isostatic press (CIP) apparatus for preparation of precursor rods and the zone melting method for unidirectional solidification. The pressed precursor rods with three different compositions Y1.6Ba2.3Cu3.3Ox, with/without Pt 0.3 mass% and with 10%Ag-0.3%Pt were prepared by the large CIP. We have succeeded in fabrication of long single domain rods of 170 mm in length in the case of Pt added rods. We fabricated Ag-added rods for improvement of mechanical strength and investigated the influence of the pulling rate upon the solidification behavior for long length rods. The rate of 2 mm/h was found to be suitable for achieving quasisteady state growth, which is necessary for fabricating long rod with keeping fine dispersion of Ag inclusion.
