摘要
Envelope pulses modeled by a nonlinear Schroedinger equation can exhibit shock formation. This effect occurs when third order linear dispersion and nonlinear dispersion are included in the model equation. Numerical modeling of the higher order equation indicates that at lower pulse amplitudes a soliton will form, but as the pulse amplitude is increased a shock will form before the formation of a soliton.
